What to expect in LA 2028!
Paris Olympics are over but what is LA planning? While seeing Tom Cruise jump off the stadium and out of a plane was interesting that didn't really show us much. The musical acts were nice but also....not really showing us much of what do expect. I do hope that Hollywood puts some money into the Olympics and helps the organizers publicize the event!
They are not building any new, permanent venues. SOFI stadium will host swimming with a temporary pool built just for the Olympics, similar to what they did at Olympic Trials this year in the Colts Stadium. Athletes are going to stay in the dorms at the UCLA. It also sounds like baseball and softball will be held in Oklahoma City?!?! I don't get that but as we get close I'm sure more will be explained.
Opening Ceremonies will be in the LA Memorial Stadium just like the last two times LA hosted the Summer Olympics. No plans to make a new cauldron or anything but I'm sure some updates to the venue will be made.
New Sports to be contested will be flag football, baseball/softball, cricket, lacrosse and squash. Breaking is out (this was decided before it was contested in Paris) and boxing may be out too if they can't find a fair governing body for it. Also, Modern Pentathlon is getting a serious make-over. I was finally able to watch it and frankly, it needs it! The changes they've made over the last few years have not benefitted the sport at all. The only change I absolutely know of is the removal of the horse jumping portion. There is concern over the treatment of the horses. So they will replace it with an obstacle-course portion, similar to American Ninja Warrior.
There may also be changes to the martial arts programs if Japan keeps protesting. We will have to wait and see on that.
There will also be some new variants in sports like a coastal rowing event, which sounds interesting.
Only 1,431 days away!
