Day -1: Team USA Kicks Off with a Bang!
Alright, welcome back! Day -1 is in the books, and it was a packed one, especially for our American athletes.
🏒 Day -1: Team USA Kicks Off with a Bang!
The anticipation was palpable, and Day -1 of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics delivered! While the Opening Ceremony is still 24 hours away, the competitive fire is already burning bright. From dominating on the ice to making strategic plays on the pebble, Team USA left its mark today.
🏒 Women's Hockey: A Resounding Victory!
The puck officially dropped this morning for Women's Hockey, and the U.S. Women's National Team wasted no time establishing their presence. Facing a formidable Czechia squad, Team USA delivered a convincing performance with a 6-2 victory.
Ohio Pride Shines Bright: Cleveland Heights' own Laila Edwards made her historic Olympic debut, bringing energy and skill to the forward lines. The excitement back in Ohio for her performance is immense!
Key Plays: The Americans showcased their depth, with goals coming from multiple lines and a solid defensive effort that kept the Czech attack largely at bay. This win sets a strong tone for the tournament and builds confidence early.
🥌 Curling Mixed Doubles: A Day of Mixed Results
The mixed doubles curling continued today at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium, and it was an action-packed schedule for Team USA.
Morning Match vs. Norway: The American duo showed resilience but ultimately fell to a strong Norwegian team.
Evening Match vs. Switzerland: In a must-win situation to stay competitive in the round-robin, Team USA rallied with a powerful performance, securing a crucial victory!
The Big Picture: While the journey is long, today's win against Switzerland keeps the American pair firmly in contention as they navigate the tough mixed doubles field. Every "W" counts in this format!
Around the Rinks: Other Key Results
Canada's Dominance: The Canadian mixed doubles team continued their winning ways, looking like strong contenders early on.
Home Favorites Shine: Italy, buoyed by the home crowd, also had a strong showing today, keeping their medal hopes alive.
Global Showdowns: Other nations like Great Britain and Sweden also picked up important wins, illustrating the high level of competition across the board.
🏂 Snowboard Big Air: High Stakes in Livigno
The "Big Air" qualifiers took place today, featuring Rocky River’s own Red Gerard. This event is essentially a "one-jump wonder" where athletes launch off a massive ramp to perform their most difficult tricks.
The Result: It was a tough day for the veteran. Red Gerard finished 19th, meaning he unfortunately missed the cut for the 12-man final on Saturday.
The Silver Lining: While Big Air didn't go his way, Red is still the reigning king of Slopestyle. He will have plenty of time to reset before his signature event later in the Games.
USA Watch: Keep an eye on 17-year-old Ollie Martin, the only American to qualify for the Big Air finals. He’s the first person to ever land a 2160 (six full rotations!) in competition.
