Day 4: Morning Update — History, Heartbreak, and the "Knitting" Silver!
If Day 3 was about settling in, Day 4 is about the sheer unpredictability of the Winter Games. We’ve seen podium sweeps, technical glitches, and some of the most dramatic "almosts" in Team USA history.
🎿 Cross-Country: A Historic Silver and a Swedish Sweep
The Sprint Classic is a brutal test of endurance because you have to survive heats just to get to the big show.
The Women: TEAM USA's own Julia Kern made it all the way to the final! However, the sheer workload of the day took its toll, and she finished 6th as Sweden pulled off an incredible podium sweep.
🥇 Linn Svahn (SWE), 🥈 Jonna Sundling (SWE), 🥉 Maja Dahlqvist (SWE).
The Men: History was made today! Ben Ogden ended a 50-year medal drought for the US men in cross-country, taking the Silver. He’s been knitting between races to stay relaxed, and it clearly worked!
Johannes Høsflot Klæbo (Norway) did his signature "rocket" move up the final hill to take Gold, with fellow Norwegian Oskar Opstad Vike taking Bronze.
⛷️ Women’s Team Combined: A Strange Day in Cortina
This event was a weird one. The downhill was fast, but the slalom course was a total skier-eater.
The Lead: Breezy Johnson skied the first leg (downhill) brilliantly to put Team USA in the top spot.
The Slalom: When it switched to the slalom, the course got tricky—we saw a lot of "ski-offs" where people just couldn't hold the line. Mikaela Shiffrin skied a bit too conservatively on the technical run and finished 4th overall.
The Podium: Austria (Ariane Rädler & Katharina Huber) took the Gold, and Germany (Kira Weidle-Winkelmann & Emma Aicher) took Silver.
USA Bronze: Our second team, Jacqueline Wiles and Paula Moltzan, stayed steady through all the chaos and grabbed the Bronze! Way to go, ladies!
🛷 Women’s Singles Luge: Farquharson Finds the Podium!
You called it—Ashley Farquharson was the one to watch! After a brilliant final run, she secured the Bronze medal, matching the legendary Erin Hamlin’s feat from 2014.
🥇 Gold: Julia Taubitz (Germany) – Continuing that German dominance!
🥈 Silver: Elīna Ieva Vītola (Latvia).
⛷️ Men’s Freeski Slopestyle: A Silver Lining
The rails at Livigno Snow Park were tricky today, causing lots of stumbles.
🥇 Gold: Birk Ruud (Norway) – He was nearly perfect on his first run.
🥈 Silver: Alex Hall (USA) – He laid down an incredible second run to grab the silver!
🥉 Bronze: Luca Harrington (New Zealand).
🥌 Mixed Doubles Curling: A Silver Heartbreaker
This one hurts. Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin played their hearts out against Sweden. It came down to the final end, but Sweden’s Isabella and Rasmus Wranå (the brother-sister duo) made a perfect hit-and-stay on the last stone to win 6-5.
🥇 Gold: Sweden, 🥈 USA, 🥉 Italy.
We are so proud of the Koreys—the first-ever US Olympic medal in this event!
⛸️ Short Track: High Stakes and Heavy Falls
Women's 500m: Corinne Stoddard unfortunately took a spill, but Kristen Santos-Griswold won her heat and is looking like a force. We also have Julie Letai advancing to the finals!
Mixed Relay: This was a mess. Team USA was in a great position when a skater fell, taking out a teammate and ending our medal hopes.
🥇 Gold: Italy (Arianna Fontana now has 12 medals!), 🥈 Canada, 🥉 Belgium.
⛷️ Men’s Moguls: Moving Forward
Qualifiers went well! Nick Page and Dylan Walczyk are straight through to the final. Cole McDonald and Landon Wendler will have to ski in the second qualifying round, but they are both looking sharp!
🏒 Women’s Hockey: USA vs. CANADA
This was the "main event" of the afternoon, and wow, did our girls deliver. It was a statement win heading into the playoffs.
The Result: Team USA 6, Canada 2.
The Highlights: Caroline Harvey was everywhere, scoring twice. Hannah Bilka and Kirsten Simms also found the net. But the story of the night was our Captain, Hilary Knight, who recorded an assist to officially tie the all-time Olympic points record for Team USA!
Next Up: This win secures the #1 seed for the Americans as we head into the quarterfinals.
