❄️ Day 14: Sudden Death, Buckeye Bravery, and the Battle for Gold! 🏒
It was a day of "velcro" snow and high-flying heart attacks in Milan. Whether it was the chaos of Short Track or the bone-rattling crashes in the Halfpipe, Team USA showed up with some serious grit today.
🎿 Women’s Ski Cross: The Slow-Motion Showdown
The races were slow today thanks to "velcro snow" that was the story of the morning. It was sticky, heavy, and made the usually chaotic passing lanes feel like they were stuck in molasses. Since the leaders were hard to overtake in those conditions, the start was everything.
The Result: 🥇 Daniela Maier (Germany) took the early lead and never looked back, grabbing the Gold.
The Podium: 🥈 Fanny Smith (Switzerland) took Silver, and 🥉 Sandra Näslund (Sweden) grabbed Bronze.
The Vibe: Definitely a bit "tamer" than usual, but a masterclass in protecting a line!
🚀 Men’s Aerials: The Flap and Flip Fest
This was pure "hold your breath" television. The crashing was intense—it felt like for every perfect landing, three guys were punching the snow or doing the "back-flop" slide.
The Buckeye Pride: Our Team USA boys (including the Ohio standouts like Chris Lillis and Derek Krueger) went big, but like you said, the sticking point was... well, the sticking. They threw the difficulty, but those landings are unforgiving.
The Result: 🥇 Wang Xindi (China) stuck a monster jump to take Gold. 🥈 Noé Roth (Switzerland) took Silver, and 🥉 Li Tianma (China) grabbed the Bronze.
🥌 Curling: A Swiss Masterclass
The ice was busy today with some major playoff implications.
Men’s Bronze: Switzerland didn't just win; they put on a clinic. Switzerland took the Bronze medal with a dominant 9-1 win over Norway.
Men’s Gold Track: Canada edged out Norway earlier to secure their spot in the final against Great Britain.
Women’s Semi-Final: It was a heartbreaker for our girls. Team USA kept it close but fell to Switzerland 5-4. We’ll face Canada (who lost to Sweden) in the Bronze medal match. It’s the "North American Battle" for the final podium spot!
⛸️ Women’s 1500m Speed Skating: A Bittersweet Farewell
Our girl Brittany Bowe stepped onto the ice for what she’s hinted will be her final Olympic appearance. She skated with so much heart, but the podium was a razor-thin margin away.
The Finish: Brittany finished in 4th place with a time of 1:54.70, missing the bronze by just a fraction of a second.
The Podium: 🥇 Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong (Netherlands) took Gold, 🥈 Ragne Wiklund (Norway) Silver, and 🥉 Valerie Maltais (Canada) Bronze.
The Highlight: Even without the medal today, Brittany remains the heart and soul of this team—especially after that sweet engagement news with hockey captain Hilary Knight!
⛸️ Short Track: Stoddard’s "Depth of Hell" Bronze
This was the comeback story of the rink. Corinne Stoddard (daughter of former skater Corey Stoddard!) had a rough Olympics, falling in almost every race she entered. But today, she kept her blades under her.
The Race: In the Women’s 1500m, the South Koreans played their signature game—sitting back, waiting, and then exploding forward in the final laps.
The Result: 🥇 Kim Gilli (South Korea) and 🥈 Choi Min-jeong (South Korea) took the top spots, but Corinne Stoddard skated a fierce race to stay on her feet and grab the 🥉 Bronze! It's the first individual short track medal for a U.S. woman since 2010.
The Men’s Relay: The 5000m Team Relay was a "swooping menagerie of blades." 🥇 The Netherlands (Team Orange) took gold, 🥈 South Korea silver, and 🥉 Italy delighted the home crowd with a bronze.
🏂 Men’s Freeski Halfpipe: Ferreira’s Golden Full Set
This was terrifying to watch. The crashes were brutal, with guys smacking the deck and sliding down. Thankfully, everyone gave a thumbs up, but the tension was sky-high.
The Winner: Alex Ferreira (USA) was a man on a mission. He threw a massive final run to take the 🥇 Gold, completing his collection (he already has silver and bronze from previous Games!).
The Podium: 🥈 Henry Sildaru (Estonia) and 🥉 Brendan Mackay (Canada). Nick Goepper (USA) had a scary crash on his final run but walked away safely, finishing in 4th.
🛷 Women’s Bobsled: The Buckeye Bullet
The first two heats are in the books, and the "Ohio connection" is real! Those Team USA sleds were actually developed and tested at the Honda plant in Marysville, Ohio.
The Standings: After Run 1, we were flying, but the Germans clawed back in Heat 2.
Positioning: Kaillie Humphries and Jasmine Jones are currently in 3rd place, just a fraction of a second behind the two German sleds (Nolte/Levi and Buckwitz/Schuten). We’ve got two more heats tomorrow to see if that Ohio-made speed can bridge the gap!
🎿 Men’s 15km Biathlon: The Wind Whisperers
Gusty winds turned the shooting range into a lottery today. While the French skied like they had rockets on their boots, the wind messed with everyone’s aim.
The Mastery: Norway handled the gusts best. 🥇 Johannes Dale-Skjevdal was the only one in the field to shoot a perfect 20/20!
The Podium: 🥇 Johannes Dale-Skjevdal (Norway), 🥈 Sturla Holm Lægreid (Norway), and 🥉 Quentin Fillon Maillet (France), who skated like a madman to grab that bronze despite the misses.
🏒 Men’s Hockey: The Dream Rematch is ON!
The men saw what the women did yesterday and said, "Hold my skates."
USA vs. Slovakia: Team USA absolutely rolled. We went up 5-0 before Slovakia could even blink, eventually finishing 6-2. Jack Hughes had two goals, and the energy was electric.
Canada vs. Finland: Canada had a much tougher time, grinding out a 3-2 win.
The Finale: It’s official. USA vs. Canada for the Gold Medal on Sunday. It’s the first time since 2010!
