Day 3: Part 2 — High-Flying Drama and Gold-Medal Matches!

The sun has gone down over the Alps, but the heat in the arenas was absolutely intense this afternoon. From the ice oval to the curling sheets, here is the rest of the Day 3 action!

⛸️ Women’s 1000m Speed Skating: The Orange Wave

Team USA gave us so much hope early on. Erin Jackson and Brittany Bowe both had fantastic runs and held the lead after their pairings, but the Netherlands (Team Orange) was just waiting in the wings. They didn’t just win; they rewrote the record books twice in ten minutes!

  • The Results: * 🥇 Gold: Jutta Leerdam (Netherlands) – Set a new Olympic Record of 1:12.31!

    • 🥈 Silver: Femke Kok (Netherlands) – She had just set the record (1:12.59) in the previous pairing before Jutta broke it again!

    • 🥉 Bronze: Miho Takagi (Japan) – The reigning champ put up a fight but had to settle for third this time.

🥌 Mixed Doubles Curling: WE ARE GOING FOR GOLD!

Talk about a heart-pounder! The "Koreys" (Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin) faced off against the home favorites, Italy, in the semifinals. It was a tactical chess match that came down to the very last stone.

  • The Clincher: Team USA pulled it out in the 8th end to win 9-7, silencing the Italian crowd and punching their ticket to the final!

  • The Big Game: We will face Sweden (Isabella and Rasmus Wranå) for the Gold Medal tomorrow! Sweden dominated Great Britain 9-3 to get there. Italy and Great Britain will fight it out for the Bronze.

🏂 Women’s Snowboard Big Air: Japan Reclaims the Sky

The final was everything we hoped for after those qualifiers. Japan really showed why they are the masters of the rotation.

  • 🥇 Gold: Kokomo Murase (Japan) – She landed a massive frontside 1440 on her final jump to take the win with a 179.00!

  • 🥈 Silver: Zoi Sadowski-Synnott (New Zealand) – The favorite was leading until that final Japanese jump.

  • 🥉 Bronze: Yu Seungeun (South Korea) – The 18-year-old was the surprise of the day, snagging the bronze!

🏒 Women’s Hockey: USA Dominates the Swiss

It was another clinical performance from our women. We outshot Switzerland 50 to 21, and honestly, it felt like the puck was in our offensive zone the entire night.

  • The Goals: Joy Dunne and Caroline Harvey (our college stars!) each had a goal and two assists. Alex Carpenter, Hannah Bilka, and Haley Winn also found the back of the net to make it a 5-0 shutout.

  • Next Up: Get ready for the "Main Event"—USA vs. Canada tomorrow afternoon. This is going to be a war!

💃 Ice Dancing: Rhythm Dance Recap

Wow...the judging was definitely "interesting."

  • The Standings: 1. Laurence Fournier Beaudry & Guillaume Cizeron (France) – 90.18

    2. Madison Chock & Evan Bates (USA) – 89.72

    3. Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier (Canada) – 86.18

  • My Take: Chock and Bates looked technically superior and their energy was off the charts. They actually beat the French on the technical score, but the French edged them out on the "components" (artistry). We are only 0.46 points behind, though, so the Free Dance is going to be a battle for the Gold!

  • Other Americans: Emilea Zingas & Vadym Kolesnik are in 6th, and Christina Carreira & Anthony Ponomarenko are in 11th.

  • Interesting Note:  Madison Chock has designed many of the costumes for her competitors!

⛷️ Men’s Normal Hill Ski Jumping: A Bronze Medal Tie!

We had a rare tie for the podium today in a very exciting final.

  • 🥇 Gold: Philipp Raimund (Germany) – A massive 106.5m jump to secure the win.

  • 🥈 Silver: Kacper Tomasiak (Poland).

  • 🥉 Bronze (TIE): Ren Nikaido (Japan) and Gregor Deschwanden (Switzerland) both finished with 266.0 points. They’ll both be standing on that third step of the podium tonight!

  • Team USA Watch: Jason Colby and Tate Frantz both made the final round and finished 20th and 21st—a great showing for our young jumpers.

🗓️ Looking Ahead: Tuesday (Day 4)

Get your snacks ready—Tuesday is officially "Rivalry Day" and a huge day for some of our local heroes!

  • 5:34 PM — Women’s Singles Luge (Final Run): 🥇 Medals will be awarded! Let's see if Ashley Farquharson can leapfrog onto that podium.

🌰 Ohio Spotlight: Watch Our Buckeyes!

We have some major Ohio connections to cheer for tomorrow, especially on the ice:

  • Laila Edwards (Cleveland Heights): Keep your eyes on #10 in the USA vs. Canada hockey game! Laila made history as the first Black woman to play for USA Hockey at the Olympics, and she has been a force on the ice so far.

  • The Ohio State Pipeline: The women's hockey team is practically an OSU reunion! Joy Dunne, Hannah Bilka, and Cayla Barnes (all former or current Buckeyes) will be key players in that showdown against Canada.

  • Ohio State Alums Abroad: Watch out for Sophie Jaques, another former Buckeye star who will be skating for Team Canada—it’s Buckeye vs. Buckeye out there!

What a day! Tomorrow is all about that Curling Gold and the Hockey showdown with Canada. That's all for me today.  Going to actually try and sleep in my bed!
