❄️ Day 13: Sudden Death, Snow-Globes, and the Blade Angels ⛸️
They say lucky number 13, and for Team USA, today was nothing short of legendary. From a historic hockey comeback to a figure skating drought-breaker that had us all in tears, Milan is officially painted red, white, and blue tonight.
🎿 Ski Mountaineering (Skimo): The Sprint Debut
We kicked things off with Skimo, the newest addition to the Winter Games. It’s like an obstacle course on skis—uphill, downhill, and "booting" it up stairs.
The Transitions: Watching them "rip the skins" in that swoopy motion is weirdly satisfying. Those transition zones are where the race is won or lost.
Women’s Sprint: 🥇 Marianne Fatton (Switzerland), 🥈 Emily Harrop (France), 🥉 Marta Garcia Farres (Spain).
Men’s Sprint: 🥇 Oriol Cardona Coll (Spain), 🥈 Nikita Filipov (Independent Athlete), 🥉 Thibault Anselmet (France).
🎿 Nordic Combined Team Sprint: Buckets of Snow
The new two-man format is a winner! But man, the weather was like a literal snow-globe out there.
The Struggle: Seeing them hit those snowdrifts and wipe out was comical, but these guys are machines
The Podium: 🥇 Norway (Oftebro & Skoglund), 🥈 Finland (Hirvonen & Herola), 🥉 Austria (Rettenegger & Lamparter).
Team USA: Niklas Malacinski and Ben Loomis put in a massive shift to finish in 7th place.
⛸️ Men’s 1500m Speed Skating: The Stoltz Streak
Jordan Stoltz went for the triple-gold today, but it just wasn't meant to be.
The Result: 🥇 Ning Zhongyan (China) skated the race of his life, setting a new Olympic Record (1:41.98). Jordan took the 🥈 Silver (1:42.75), making him the first American with three medals in Milan! 🥉 Kjeld Nuis (Netherlands) took the Bronze.
🏒 Women’s Hockey: The Golden Goal!
Final: USA 2, Canada 1 (OT)
This was a classic. Canada led 1-0 for almost the entire game, and it felt like they were going to suffocate us. But with just over two minutes left, captain Hilary Knight tied it up to send us to overtime.
The Winner: Just four minutes into sudden death, Megan Keller buried a highlight-reel goal to give Team USA the GOLD! 🥇
The Rest: 🥈 Canada takes Silver. 🥉 Switzerland beat Sweden in their own OT thriller (3-2) to take the Bronze.
🏒 Men’s Hockey: The Semifinal Path
USA vs. Slovakia: After beating Sweden yesterday, Team USA is set to face Slovakia in the semifinal.
Canada vs. Finland: Canada escaped Czechia in OT to set up their match with the Finns. The gold medal dream is still alive for both North American giants!
⛸️ Women’s Figure Skating: Alysa Liu Ends the Drought
This was the most incredible comeback story of the Games.
The Redemption: Amber Glenn (USA) was fierce. She hit her triple axel and climbed all the way from 13th to finish 5th overall.
The Star: Alysa Liu (USA) skated to "MacArthur Park" and it was pure joy. Those spins! She was untouchable.
The Podium: 🥇 Alysa Liu (USA)—the first American woman to win individual gold since 2002! 🥈 Kaori Sakamoto (Japan) and 🥉 Ami Nakai (Japan).
Team USA Note: Isabeau Levito sadly had an early fall and finished in 12th place.
🥌 Women’s Curling: Moving On!
Final: USA 7, Switzerland 6
Tabitha Peterson and the girls needed an extra end to beat the Swiss, but they did it. They officially move on to the semifinals tomorrow for a rematch against these same Swiss women!
⛷️ Women’s Freeski Halfpipe: The Pressure Cooker
The qualifiers for the halfpipe were absolute nail-biters today. The goal was to finish in the top 12 to make the final, and the tension was thick enough to cut with a ski edge.
The Standout: Great Britain’s Zoe Atkin led the pack with a clinical 91.50, but the drama followed defending champ Eileen Gu (China), who fell on her first run and had to go "clutch" on her second to finish 5th.
Team USA Qualifiers: We had two girls punch their tickets to the final!
Svea Irving put down a solid 80.75 to qualify in 8th place.
Kate Gray grabbed the final spot, finishing in 12th with a 74.75.
Heartbreak: Unfortunately, the youngest member of Team USA, 15-year-old Abby Winterberger, finished just outside the cut in 15th, and Riley Jacobs finished 18th.
