29 July - Day 3 - Paris Summer Olympic Games

Today is my birthday and I'm wishing for Gold medals, though any medals will do, and rain today!

So what happened in Day 3....here we go:

Men's Gymnastics:  The boys are back in town and boy did they ever perform!  They stuck so many landings, flew through the air, and tamed that pommel horse!    They had some help with Team GB having some horrible vaults and both China and Japan making mistakes.  But, in the end they did their jobs and got it done and brought home the Bronze medal for the Team event!  So very proud of these guys!  They will be back on Wednesday for the All Around and Event finals.

Men's 10 M Platform Synchro Diving:  Team USA did not qualify a team for this event so I rooted for Team GB, since Daley lives in the US now.  As has been the norm in diving, China had the Gold wrapped up from the start.  The fight was for Silver and Bronze.  Daley and his new partner (his 5th!), Williams, secured the Silver early and dove really well!  Team Canada fought off the Italian, German, and Mexican teams to take the Bronze.

Women's Air Rifle (Standing position):  Shout-out to Sgt. Maddalena of the US Army who trained in Marksmanship at Camp Perry!  She finished 4th in Women's Air Rifle (Standing).  She is a 3 position shooter and didn't expect to make it to the finals in the single position.  She took 4th place, the first for a US woman.  Way to go!

Swimming:

Team USA qualified most of its swimmers in the morning heats except for Whitlock in the Men's 800M Free.

In the evening, Canada's young phenom, McIntosh easily took the Gold in the Women's 400 IM but Team USA took the rest of the podium with Grimes getting Silver and Weyant getting Bronze.

In the Men's 200 Freestyle, Hobson from Team USA swam for a Bronze win with Team GB taking Silver, and Romania taking the Gold.

In the Men's 100 M Backstroke, veteran Ryan Murphy won the Bronze medal with stiff competition from China (Silver) and a fantastic Italian swimmer (Gold).

Ryan was also treated to a surprise from his family.....IT'S A GIRL!

In the Women's 100 Backstroke Semifinal, Regan and Berkoff made it through to the finals.  Then bad news hit.  In the Women's 100 M Breaststroke, Team USA's Lilly King missed out on winning Bronze by 0.01.  South Africa took Gold, China took Silver, and Ireland won Bronze.  The bad news didn't stop there though with Team USA finishing in last place in the Women's 200 M Freestyle.  Aussies took Gold and Silver with China taking the Bronze.

More swimming and hopefully a better day tomorrow.  Katie Ledecky will be swimming in the 1500!

In Women's Field Hockey, Team USA tied with Team Spain.

In Men's Mountain Bike Cross country, the men got to enjoy the scenery in the same arena that the Women competed in yesterday.  Team USA's Amos finished 7th which is the best finish ever for Team USA!  Team GB took the Gold, France took Silver, and South Africa took the Bronze.

Women's Waterpolo:  Perhaps the girls were having too much fun with Flavr Flav, since they LOST to Team Spain.  They need to regroup and get their heads back in the game.

Women's Rugby 7s:  Team USA's Eagles lost to France but still made it to the semifinals where they smashed Team GB 17-7.  They move onto the finals.

Women's Indoor Volleyball:  Team USA played their hearts out against a really tall Team China!  The match went 5 sets and in the end China came away with the victory.  Two fantastic teams battling for every point...it was a sight to see!  I'm so proud of our Team and hope they can shake off this lose and move forward stronger for it.

Men's Beach Volleyball:  The Team of Evans and Budinger SHINED in their match with France winning the match 2-0.  It was a fun game to watch!

Men's Street Skateboard:  Team USA had two riders (Jagger and Nyjah) make it to the finals which they led through most of the competition but the Japanese defending Gold medalist pulled out one heck of a trick in the 4th round of tricks and ended up edging out our guys for the Gold.  Jagger brings home the Silver and Nyjah brings home the Bronze.

Sculls 8 Boats:  Team USAs Men move onto the medal rounds but the women look like they are out of the medal competition.

Women's Basketball:  Team USA dominated the Japanese team 102- 76

Men's Foil:  Team USA's Itkin bested Japan to win the Bronze medal!  Nice job!

Women's Beach Volleyball:  Team USA's Kloth & Nuss took the match in 2 sets over the Aussies

Surfing:  Team USA's women move onto the finals but the men are out.  Tahiti....Wow!  The waves they are getting are HUGE!

Equestrian Eventing - Day 3:  Today was show jumping in the Team Event competition.  Team USA had dug themselves into too deep a hole to medal, but really jumped well today!  Boyd & Bruno did fantastic!  With Team Germany out of the medals, Team France was able to take the Silver and Team Japan the Bronze.  Gold....Team GB of course!

Individual jumping:  Germany's Jung/Chipmunk won Gold, Austria's Burton took Silver, and Collette from Team GB wins Bronze

Versailles has proved to be a fantastic venue!

Women's Tennis:  All of Team USAs competitors moved onto the next rounds

Tuesday....Women's Team Gymnastics, more swimming, more volleyball, and more.....
